A solitary volunteer chive (llium schoenoprasum) raises its bloom to draw our attention:

It’s all that’s left of a rather large clump that grew for years in the corner of one of my raised beds :-(

I’m taken with the notion that it will be AI (digital) avatars of ourselves who help society sort out many of the sticky issues resulting from the absence of basic needs for far too many which have plagued humanity for millennia. The article, “Digital Humans: A 2021 Artificial Intelligence (AI) Trend Explained” lists a few of the industries whose outputs relate directly to meeting basic needs — healthcare, energy, and education — and are already feeling the headwinds of disruption caused by digitized humans.

During the last half of the 20th century, three developments set the stage for this grand leap forward in the improvement of the human condition worldwide:

  1. The Internet and WorldWideWeb: a common global platform that puts everyone potentially in contact with everyone else whether by voice, text, or data
  2. Cellular and Satellite Networks: that enables cell phones / most smart phones (devices with operating systems) access to and interface with the common global platform wherever they are located and whoever has them
  3. Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning: processes, interprets, and manipulates the data generated by people using devices on the common global platform to develop “games” / “virtual realities” in which people can communicate from any language to any other language, understand one another, experiment with alternatives, anticipate outcomes and consequences from certain behaviors, and enact courses of action that generate the greatest benefit for the least cost.

Boomers and the Gen X crowd, who are clearly products of the 20th century, can easily identify with the three bolded “developments” launched during the last quarter of the 20th century. However, we can also see how Millennials and Gen Z folks, who are shaping the 21st century, are evolving and morphing these “old technologies” so that we can entertain and envision POSSIBILITIES for a sustainable reality well into the future. As an example, consider Imortal.ai  and the concept of digital immortality in which it is invested. Ultimately, though, It’s really all about generational handoffs and making sure everyone has skin in the game and feels like their skin can make a positive difference. Immortality in the physical realm might be highly overrated ;-)

In the same way, the words I speak to you here tonight may produce no effect whatever. Some hearts may be affected, then soon forget; others owing to superstitious ideas and imaginations may even fail to hear and understand; but the blessed souls who are attentive to my exhortation and admonition, listening with the ear of acceptance, allowing my words to penetrate effectively, will advance day by day toward full fruition, yea even to the Supreme Concourse. Consider how the parable makes attainment dependent upon capacity. Unless capacity is developed, the summons of the Kingdom cannot reach the ear, the light of the Sun of Truth will not be observed, and the fragrances of the rose garden of inner significance will be lost. Let us endeavor to attain capacity, susceptibility and worthiness that we may hear the call of the glad tidings of the Kingdom, become revivified by the breaths of the Holy Spirit, hoist the standard of the oneness of humanity, establish human brotherhood, and under the protection of divine grace attain the everlasting and eternal life. 1
