Noted

Yet another fungus variety snapped by Astral Prospecting at the close of 2021—Split Gills ( Schizophyllum commune )

Widespread, edible — consumed mainly in the tropical areas of Mexico and India due to its tough texture which resists rotting in hot, humid environments — and offers health benefits as an antioxidant and anti-cancer / anti-tumor properties.

This book is written for people of all religious persuasions, but I cannot hide the fact that my upbringing and leanings lead me to Christianity—and this despite my anguish at its failings, blindness, and brutal history.

Nonetheless, I have included prayers from every tradition for it is my belief that if there is to be any reconciliation in this world, it will come from seeing what we hold in common. Many of the prayers may be found in an interfaith book, All in Good Faith: A Resource Book for Multi-Faith Prayer, edited by Jean Potter and Marcus Braybrooke, published by the World Congress of Faiths in 1997. Other prayers have been collected over the years in the same way that I collect quotations that speak to my heart. The prayers that have been left out are as lovely as those included, but their collection is left to your personal taste.

You will find this an idiosyncratic book. The Bible quotations are taken from the HarperCollins Study Bible, New Revised Standard Version, an annotated edition by the Society of Biblical Literature, 1989. But sometimes I have simply paraphrased a text.

It is customary to give acknowledgment to all those who have helped or encouraged a book. In this case so many have contributed to the birth of this small volume—editors, agent, friends, children and adults, strangers and family—that even a partial list would take up all the pages. You must know who you are. In anonymity, please accept may heartfelt gratitude.
